In July 2018, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that plants obtained by mutagenesis are genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) in the sense of EU Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of GMO’s into the environment, unless they are obtained by mutagenesis techniques which have conventionally been used in a number of applications and have a long safety record.
